NLSAT PhD 2023 for admission to NLSIU research programmes on April 30; eligibility, selection process

NLSAT PhD 2023 registration for admission to PhD law, interdisciplinary programmes will close on April 6, 2023. Candidates can register at nls.ac.in.

NEW DELHI : The National Law School of India University (NLSIU) will conduct the National Law School Admission Test - PhD (NLSAT PhD) 2023 for admission to PhD law and PhD interdisciplinary programmes for the academic session 2023-24 on April 30. Candidates can apply for NLSAT PhD 2023 on the official website – nls.ac.in. The last date to apply is April 6, 2023.

Candidates will have to pay an application fee of Rs 3,000. They will have to submit a research proposal of 6-8 pages. There are a total of 8 PhD seats in NLSIU including four PhD law seats and four in interdisciplinary.

The duration of the NLSAT PhD 2023 exam will be 150 minutes. The exam will contain research aptitude carrying 50 marks and essays or answers on law topics carrying 50 marks. Candidates will have to secure above 50% in the written test for making a research proposal or oral presentation before the panel of experts.

NLSAT PhD 2023 selection process

Candidates will be selected for admission to PhD programmes in NLSIU on the basis of marks obtained in NLSAT PhD 2023, research proposal and oral presentation. The written test carries 70% weightage whereas research proposal and presentation carry 20% and 10% weigtages, respectively.

NLSAT PhD 2023: Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility criteria for PhD law is as follows:

• Candidates having a 5-year or 10 semester or 15 tri-semester bachelor’s degree programme in law through regular mode from a recognized university having a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade. (70% for SC, ST, OBC-NCL, persons with disabilities)
• Candidates having a 3-year or 6 semester or 9 tri-semester bachelor’s degree programme in law (LLB) through regular mode from a recognized university having a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade. (70% for SC, ST, OBC-NCL, persons with disabilities)
• Candidates having a Masters in Law degree (LLM) through regular mode from a recognized university having an aggregate marks of at least 55% marks or equivalent grade (50% of marks or equivalent grade in case of SC, ST, OBC-NCL, persons with disabilities)

Eligibility criteria for PhD interdisciplinary is as follows:

• Candidates having a masters degree in any discipline through regular mode from a recognized university having an aggregate marks of at least 55% marks or equivalent grade (50% of marks or equivalent grade in case of SC, ST, OBC-NCL, persons with disabilities)
• Candidates having passed the Company Secretaryship exam conducted by the Institute of Company Secretaries (ICSI) and have been awarded ACS while having LLB degree
• Candidates having passed the Chartered Accountants (CA) exam conducted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants (ICAI) and have been awarded membership along with LLB degree
• Candidates having Master of Business Laws (MBL) degree from NLSIU with a minimum 4 CGPA and having a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university.

How much marks should i score in clat 2025 to get into nlsiu banglore.

Nlsiu Banglore is one of the most prestigious and highly ranked college, that make is difficult to secure a seat for many students. To get in to nlsiu in 2025, you must score 95+ marks  to have assurance of seat for general category. For other categories, the score is between 85-90 based on previous trends.

About 25% seats of Nlsiu Banglore are reserved for Karnataka Residents. So ,it makes more competition for other state students to get into ,as one - fourth seats are already reserved.

To get into nlsiu Banglore ,you really need to work very hard, as thousands of students sit for exam, and only few of them are selected, about 50-60 students form general category.

Nls overhauls phds for 5 new scholars: full funding, stipends, more ‘rigour’, ‘quality’, hopes to compete globally.

N LSIU Bangalore has drastically overhauled its PhD in law programme, due to introduce full funding of the degree and set to make offers to five new PhD scholars around next week.

NLSIU vice-chancellor (VC) Prof Sudhir Krishnaswamy revealed yesterday, in an online webinar of five current and former national law school VCs hosted by JGLS Sonepat: “I can tell you in 2019 at NLS, we’ve slowed down the PhD programme. We’ve scaled back a huge amount.”

“I joined very late in the academic year - we are now advertising and selected [candidates],” he had added, in response to a question about postgraduate legal education by moderator and JGLS dean Prof Raj Kumar. “This is a different cohort of PhD students and we have promised all of them funding.”

We understand from an NLS source that the new PhD stipend would be Rs 25,000 per month, and that around five offers to candidates would be confirmed on that basis around next week.

Update 13:23 : Nalsar Hyderabad had introduced fully-funded four-year PhD programmes around three years ago. Stipends are Rs 25,000 per month in the first year and Rs 35,000 per month in the subsequent three years, with around five new candidates admitted per year, including LLB graduates who will also obtain an LLM as part of the PhD programme. Nalsar VC Prof Faizan Mustafa had also introduced a similar Rs 25,000 stipend PhD programme at NLU Cuttack in 2010-11.

“All of them will be funded by NLS through the PhD years and we have a different approach now to this. [It is] not about scale, [it] is about quality,” noted Krishnaswamy.

We understand that there are currently around 90 PhD candidates at NLSIU, who are not being funded by the law school and some of whom might not be currently actively pursuing the degree at the moment. NLSIU is going through an exercise to confirm active PhD students, asking each to make a presentation about the current status of their research.

“We have a long way to go, we have rigorous course work, rigorous pathways ensuring supervision and quality of work,” Krishnaswamy had said in the JGLS session. “The PhD in India in law, that’s going to change.”

The NLSIU vice chancellor predicted that Covid-19 might not be all bad for Indian law schools.

“Covid is interesting - I think it affects the US, UK and Australian universities more than us,” he mused. During the current circumstances, he said, it was a possible pitch for Indian law schools to try and retain and attract post-graduate law candidates who might otherwise have gone abroad by default. “Try us,” he suggested Indian law schools could begin to say to such students.

“If we are able to up our standards we will change, using this crisis, what the Indian LLM and Indian PhDs mean,” Krishnaswamy said.

Direct PhD entry for grads in Engg, Architecture & Law Engineering, Architecture and Law graduates can soon straight away enrol for doctorate programmes skipping the Masters, provided they clear the entrance examination and interview. At present, direct admission of B Tech students to PhD programs is permitted only in some of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).
