Conclusions wrap up what you have been discussing in your paper. After moving from general to specific information in the introduction and body paragraphs, your conclusion should begin pulling back into more general information that restates the main points of your argument. Conclusions may also call for action or overview future possible research. The following outline may help you conclude your paper:
In a general way,
- Restate your topic and why it is important,
- Restate your thesis/claim,
- Address opposing viewpoints and explain why readers should align with your position,
- Call for action or overview future research possibilities.
Remember that once you accomplish these tasks, unless otherwise directed by your instructor, you are finished. Done. Complete. Don't try to bring in new points or end with a whiz bang(!) conclusion or try to solve world hunger in the final sentence of your conclusion. Simplicity is best for a clear, convincing message.
The preacher's maxim is one of the most effective formulas to follow for argument papers:
Tell what you're going to tell them (introduction).
Tell them (body).
Tell them what you told them (conclusion).

So, youâve written an outstanding essay and couldnât be more proud. But now you have to write the final paragraph. The conclusion simply summarizes what youâve already written, right? Well, not exactly. Your essayâs conclusion should be a bit more finessed than that. Luckily, youâve come to the perfect place to learn how to write a conclusion. Weâve put together this guide to fill you in on everything you should and shouldnât do when ending an essay. Follow our advice, and youâll have a stellar conclusion worthy of an A+ in no time.
Tips for Ending an Essay
- Rephrase your thesis to include in your final paragraph to bring the essay full circle.
- End your essay with a call to action, warning, or image to make your argument meaningful.
- Keep your conclusion concise and to the point, so you donât lose a readerâs attention.
- Do your best to avoid adding new information to your conclusion and only emphasize points youâve already made in your essay.
- âAll in allâ
- âUltimatelyâ
- âFurthermoreâ
- âAs a consequenceâ
- âAs a resultâ
- Make sure to write your main points in a new and unique way to avoid repetition.
- Letâs say this is your original thesis statement: âAllowing students to visit the library during lunch improves campus life and supports academic achievement.â
- Restating your thesis for your conclusion could look like this: âEvidence shows students who have access to their schoolâs library during lunch check out more books and are more likely to complete their homework.â
- The restated thesis has the same sentiment as the original while also summarizing other points of the essay.
- âWhen you use plastic water bottles, you pollute the ocean. Switch to using a glass or metal water bottle instead. The planet and sea turtles will thank you.â
- âThe average person spends roughly 7 hours on their phone a day, so thereâs no wonder cybersickness is plaguing all generations.â
- âImagine walking on the beach, except the soft sand is made up of cigarette butts. They burn your feet but keep washing in with the tide. If we donât clean up the ocean, this will be our reality.â
- â Lost is not only a show that changed the course of television, but itâs also a reflection of humanity as a whole.â
- âIf action isnât taken to end climate change today, the global temperature will dangerously rise from 4.5 to 8 °F (â15.3 to â13.3 °C) by 2100.â
- Focus on your essay's most prevalent or important parts. What key points do you want readers to take away or remember about your essay?
- For instance, instead of writing, âThatâs why I think that Abraham Lincoln was the best American President,â write, âThatâs why Abraham Lincoln was the best American President.â
- Thereâs no room for ifs, ands, or butsâyour opinion matters and doesnât need to be apologized for!
- For instance, words like âfirstly,â âsecondly,â and âthirdlyâ may be great transition statements for body paragraphs but are unnecessary in a conclusion.
- For instance, say you began your essay with the idea that humanityâs small sense of sense stems from spaceâs vast size. Try returning to this idea in the conclusion by emphasizing that as human knowledge grows, space becomes smaller.
- For example, you could extend an essay on the television show Orange is the New Black by bringing up the culture of imprisonment in America.

In this article, our argumentative essay writing service explains the art of creating the perfect ending for your paper. So, without further ado, let's delve into some valuable tips and illustrative examples for your next endeavor.
The Purpose of a Conclusion of an Argumentative Essay
A good argumentative essay conclusion paragraph serves as the final opportunity to reinforce your argument's validity and leave a lasting impression on your reader.
- Summarizes Key Points : First, one of the primary functions of the conclusion is to recap the main points of your essay. This helps remind the reader of the core arguments you've presented throughout your paper.
- Reinforces Your Thesis Statement : Your thesis statement is the backbone of your argumentative essay. In the conclusion, reiterate your thesis in a concise manner to remind the reader of the central claim you've been advocating for.
- Provides Closure : A well-crafted conclusion provides closure to your paper. It signals to the reader that your argumentative claim has been fully explored and concludes the discussion on a satisfactory note.
- Call to Action or Further Reflection : Depending on the topic of your argumentative essay, you may choose to end with a call to action, encouraging readers to take a specific stance or course of action. Alternatively, you can prompt further reflection by posing thought-provoking questions related to your argumentative thesis.
- Leaves a Lasting Impression : Lastly, the conclusion is your chance to leave a lasting impression on your reader. By synthesizing your arguments and leaving them with a memorable closing statement, you can ensure that your paper resonates with your audience even after they've finished reading.
Elements of an Argumentative Essay Conclusion
Now that we understand the purpose of a conclusion in an argumentative essay, let's break down the key components that make up a strong and impactful ending:
- Restate the Thesis : Begin by restating your thesis statement. However, avoid simply copying and pasting your original argument verbatim. Instead, rephrase it in a way that emphasizes the significance of your argument and its relevance to the broader discussion.
- Summarize Key Points : Provide a brief summary of the main assertions presented in your argumentative essay. Focus on highlighting the most compelling evidence and key insights that support your thesis. Keep this summary concise to avoid rehashing all the details discussed in the body paragraphs.
- Offer Closure : Signal to the reader that your paper is coming to an end by offering closure. You can achieve this by using transitional phrases that indicate the conclusion of your assertion, such as 'In Summary' or 'To summarize.' This helps guide the reader towards the final thoughts of your argumentative essay.
- Reinforce the Argument's Importance : Take a moment to emphasize the significance of your argument and its implications. Explain why your perspective matters and how it contributes to the ongoing conversation or debate surrounding the topic. This reinforces the relevance of your essay and leaves a lasting impression on the reader.
- End with a Strong Closing Statement : Finish your conclusion with a memorable closing statement that leaves a lasting impression on the reader. This could be a thought-provoking question, a call to action, or a reflection on the broader implications of your argument. Aim to leave your reader with something to ponder long after they've finished reading your essay.
Formatting the Conclusion Paragraph for Argumentative Essay
Formatting the conclusion of your argumentative essay is just as important as crafting its content. Here are some key elements to consider when structuring your ending:
- Length : Keep your conclusion concise and to the point. Aim for around 3-5 sentences, depending on the overall length of your essay. Avoid introducing new propositions or evidence in the ending; instead, focus on summarizing and reinforcing your main points.
- Transitional Phrases : Use transitional phrases to signal the beginning of your conclusion. Phrases like 'In conclusion,' 'To sum up,' or 'Ultimately' can help guide the reader towards the final thoughts of your argumentative essay.
- Consistency with Essay Structure : Ensure that your conclusion aligns with the overall structure of your writing. It should seamlessly transition from the body paragraphs and provide a satisfying conclusion to the claim presented in the introduction.
- Tone : Maintain a confident and assertive tone throughout your conclusion. Avoid introducing uncertainty or hedging language that may weaken the impact of your argument.
As for the formatting specifics, you can ensure that the paragraph is well-structured, coherent, and visually appealing by following these points:
- Alignment : Keep left alignment consistent with the rest of the essay.
- Font and Size : Use the same font (e.g., Times New Roman, Arial) and size (e.g., 12) as the body text.
- Spacing : Maintain double spacing between lines without additional spacing between paragraphs.
- Indentation : Indent the first line of each paragraph, typically half an inch or 1.27 cm.
How to Write a Conclusion for an Argumentative Essay in 7 Steps
Crafting a powerful conclusion for your argumentative essay doesn't have to be tricky. In fact, by adding a few extra touches, you can make your ending even stronger.
- Restate Your Thesis with Emphasis : As discussed previously, begin by rephrasing your thesis statement to remind the reader of your main argumentative claim.
- Summarize Key Points : The next step is to provide a brief summary of the main arguments you've presented in your paper. Focus on highlighting the most compelling evidence and key insights that support your thesis, avoiding unnecessary repetition.
- Highlight the Significance of Your Argument : Emphasize the importance of your argument and its implications. Explain why your perspective is relevant and how it contributes to the broader discussion or debate surrounding the topic.
- Appeal to Emotion or Ethics (if applicable) : Depending on the nature of your argument, you may choose to appeal to the reader's emotions or ethical values in the ending. Use emotionally resonant language or ethical appeals to reinforce the moral or humanitarian significance of your argumentative claim, encouraging the reader to empathize with your perspective.
- Offer a Solution or Next Steps : If your claim addresses a problem or issue, consider offering a potential solution or suggesting actionable steps that can be taken to address the problem. This demonstrates your commitment to finding practical resolutions and encourages the reader to consider possible courses of action.
- Encourage Further Inquiry or Discussion : Stimulate intellectual curiosity by inviting the reader to continue exploring the topic further or engage in further discussion. Pose thought-provoking questions or suggest areas for future research, encouraging the reader to delve deeper into the complexities of the issue.
- Reiterate the Overall Impression : Reflect on the overall impression you want to leave with the reader and reiterate the key takeaway points of your essay. Emphasize the lasting impact of your stance and leave the reader with a clear understanding of its significance in the broader context.

These examples will give you a better sense of how to apply these techniques in your own writing.
- Thesis Statement : 'Mandatory vaccination policies are essential for protecting public health.'
- Conclusion : 'To summarize, while debates surrounding individual rights and government mandates may continue, the evidence overwhelmingly supports the efficacy and necessity of mandatory vaccination policies. By ensuring high vaccination rates, we can effectively prevent the spread of deadly diseases and safeguard the well-being of vulnerable populations. It's imperative that policymakers prioritize public health initiatives based on scientific evidence to protect our communities from preventable outbreaks.'
- Thesis Statement : 'The criminalization of homelessness exacerbates social inequality and undermines human rights.'
- Conclusion : 'In summary, punitive measures targeting homeless individuals only perpetuate cycles of poverty, marginalization, and despair. Instead of criminalizing homelessness, we must prioritize compassionate, evidence-based solutions that address the root causes of homelessness and provide support services to those in need. By investing in affordable housing, mental health resources, and social services, we can create communities that uphold the dignity and rights of all individuals, regardless of their housing status.'
Steer Clear of These Common Conclusion Writing Mistakes
When learning how to conclude an argumentative essay, it's crucial to avoid falling into common traps that can undermine the effectiveness of your conclusion. Here are some tips to steer clear of these pitfalls:
- Steer Clear of Adding New Information : Your conclusion isn't the place to introduce fresh arguments or evidence. Stick to summarizing what you've already covered in your essay to maintain clarity and focus.
- Avoid Parroting the Introduction : While it's fine to revisit your thesis and main arguments, don't simply repeat what you've said in the introduction. Instead, offer a fresh perspective or insight that adds depth to your argument.
- Be Specific, Not Vague : Keep your language precise and avoid generalizations. Being too vague can dilute the impact of your conclusion, so strive for clarity and specificity.
- Don't Forget Counterarguments : Acknowledge opposing viewpoints, even if briefly, to demonstrate a well-rounded understanding of the issue. Ignoring counterarguments can make your ending seem biased and weak.
- End with a Bang, Not a Whimper : Finish strong with a closing statement that leaves a lasting impression. Whether it's a thought-provoking question or a call to action, make sure your conclusion packs a punch and leaves your reader thinking.

How to Write a Conclusion for an Argumentative Essay
- 3-minute read
- 27th October 2023
Youâve spent hours researching and writing a compelling argumentative essay â now itâs finally time to write the conclusion. The conclusion may be the most significant part of your essay because itâs your final opportunity to make a lasting impression on your reader. Intimidated? Donât be! In this post, weâll show you how to write a strong conclusion for an argumentative essay.
Restate the Thesis and Summarize the Key Points
Begin by reiterating your thesis statement to emphasize your main point. However, to avoid sounding repetitive, itâs best to paraphrase the thesis and not use the exact wording from the introductory paragraph. You can also briefly recap the key points youâve made throughout your essay. You donât need to dive into too much detail here; the conclusion should be a concise reminder of your most critical arguments and avoid unnecessary repetition or commentary. Keep in mind that the conclusion is not the place to provide information or arguments you havenât included in the body of your essay.
Emphasize the Significance of Your Arguments
The conclusion of your essay is a good place to highlight the importance of your argument and the implications of your findings. Briefly explain why your essay topic is significant and how your perspective relates to the wider context. For example, if youâre writing on the rising cost of medicine, you can discuss how this topic relates to the broader fields of health care and pharmaceutical sales.
Briefly Address Counterarguments
If youâve discussed counterarguments in your essay, briefly acknowledge them in the conclusion. You can simply mention that although there are opposing views, youâve supported your argument with the evidence presented in your essay.

Maintain a Consistent Tone
Keep the tone of your conclusion consistent with the rest of the essay. For example, if your essay has been primarily formal and academic, maintain that tone in the conclusion (e.g., avoid closing with an informal anecdote or a witty observation).
End With a Thought-Provoking Statement
End your conclusion with a thought-provoking statement or call to action . This could involve a recommendation or prediction, or you could pinpoint areas for further research or action related to the topic. For example, if your topic is the impact of technology on education, you could end your essay by recommending further research into the long-term effects of technology use on students beyond elementary school.

Argumentative Essay Conclusion - Write a Strong Concluding Paragraph
If you're reading this article, chances are you have been given an assignment that involves writing. And, that's the argumentative one. An argumentative essay does include some basic elements found in other types of academic papers, but here, we'll focus on its conclusion. After reading this article, you'll learn how to write a strong essay conclusion for a text with an argumentative implication.
As always, it's useful to recall that an argumentative essay consists of the introduction, body, and that element we're going to discuss in detail. All of these sections should be organized well and be developed around the main idea of your assignment . An introduction prepares grounds for your ideas, your essay body provides all necessary details and supporting evidence, and an argumentative essay conclusion is the last chance for you to defend a point and strengthen a final impression. All these elements ensure a logical flow and interconnection of the ideas discussed. And, to finish the writing well, it is important to know the standards and requirements of the essay's last part.
So, why is it necessary to have a conclusion in your argumentative essay? First, without it, the entire assignment will appear incomplete. Recall listening to a piece of music or song which abruptly comes to an end, or reading a book that ends in a cliffhanger. That would leave a bad taste in the mouths of those reading your paper or make the audience think poorly of the author's writing skills. Not only is the conclusion an obligatory part of any assignment, but it also brings wholeness to each of those. You may think of it as the last piece of a jigsaw puzzle: whatever is depicted in it, without that last piece, it's still incomplete. Also, a conclusion in the argumentative essay can highlight the central idea once again. That will not only help you end the writing logically but show your attention to details and competence in academic standards.
When people read lengthy argumentative essays, they can easily lose their bearings. One can use too many ideas, counterarguments, or evidence. A concluding paragraph helps the reader sort of "refresh" the whole text in their minds. That said, it isn't merely a mechanical task of summarizing the central points. The essence of doing so is even more meaningful and powerful - it can help to understand and draw connections between the issues under discussion. So, you write an argumentative conclusion to expand your readers' outlook, providing them with some relevant ideas or points they may have missed or never thought about.
Conclusions are significant for all types of papers. And, the process of writing one can be a hurdle for college students . That's because a lot more is expected from them in terms of the complexity of arguments, the use of advanced grammar, relevant references, and length of a written work. In light of this, it makes sense to offer you useful insights into how to write an argumentative essay conclusion.
Argumentative Essay Conclusion Writing
There is no best way to end an argumentative essay. The process of writing the conclusion is just as creative and subjective as that of working on other paragraphs of the work. However, some crucial elements should be included here. An argumentative essay requires you to repeat the thesis statement (optional), make the audience believe that the arguments made are valid, and cross all the T's.
Here are 3 simple steps involved in writing a good argumentative conclusion:
- Writing an outline
- Opening the conclusion
- Closing the conclusion
What follows next are some effective ways to accomplish the above-mentioned stages and achieve a well-written text. To start a concluding paragraph, you may want to do the following:
- Use a transition. Introduce the conclusion in a sequential way. The transition could be a phrase of varying length that somehow mentions previous ideas from the preceding paragraph.
- Creatively reiterate your thesis statement without being verbatim (i.e., writing it word for word). Consider the following essay conclusion example: Recently, much has been said about the appropriateness of breastfeeding in public places. However, it would not be improper to state that women who choose to do so should neglect the fact that by exposing themselves in public, they run the risk of being shamed, judged, or even sexually abused.
The highlighted part of the above sentences is a possible creative restatement of the main thesis. That can be as follows: Nursing mothers should be able to breastfeed their babies in public places without the fear of being shamed or intimidated.
To end the argumentative conclusion, consider using one of the methods below:
- End with a question. Closing your essay on a high note is a good way to make your reader want to look into the issues debated. Another way of doing so implies asking a question that invites the audience to analyze the subject beyond the aspects discussed. The question could be a rhetorical one and emphasize the importance of your argument. Here are some examples: If it's normal for a relationship to be like this, would you allow yourself or your sister to be on the receiving end of such abuse? or Would you let your child, who's a mere 5 years away from entering adulthood, be subjected to such strenuous labor to make ends meet?
- Conclude by introducing a relevant but not-so-obvious idea. That will help you create the effect of surprise, reveal something new, and provide the reader with a fresh outlook frame on the issue. Given its application in space travel and abundance of water on Earth (70% of Earth is made up of water), hydrogen as a fuel source could usher in environmentally-friendly vehicles within the next three decades!
Keep in mind that our examples are just templates. If you're writing an argument essay on a different topic, you need to come up with ideas relevant to it.
Argumentative Essay Conclusion Outline
In this section, we'll talk about the outline and give you some advice. This element lists the content of your essay - it can cover the whole text or its part. You may wonder why it's necessary to create an outline for a conclusion. The answer is simple - it helps you figure out how the last paragraph is organized and interconnected with the rest of the writing.
Remember that an outline is only a tool, but a very useful one. Unless you are a versatile and experienced writer, you may have some trouble writing a compelling essay without this element. The outline for an argumentative conclusion can be compared to a skeleton or foundation. Just as a skeleton gives shape and support to the body, it provides form and logical flow to your essay conclusion. Let's look through the following example:
- Transition. Mention the key idea or thesis in a sequence.
- Connection. Pick a sentence or two from the body that can support your central idea (use facts).
- Closing Words. Expand the issue by asking a related question to provoke ideas in the readers' minds.
The example above clearly serves as a foundation upon which the argumentative concluding paragraph can be formulated. Remember - the argumentative essay conclusion isn't for new ideas. Stick to your main questions and make sure your arguments are relevant.
