My ideal city.

I’m posting another paper from my CRP class, this one describing my ideal city. It touches on some of the things I like about Baltimore and Washington, DC.

My ideal city is probably too perfect to be real. It is most likely a large metropolitan city. The urban composition and cultural offerings of small towns or cities like Ames and Des Moines simply don’t cut it. If I am going to be settled somewhere for a long time (or even the rest of my life), it would be nice to have something new to see and do on any given day. I don’t want a city that I can thoroughly explore in just one day. However, I also don’t desire a city that is endlessly sprawled and sterile of unique or local character. A smaller city with exceptional urban form and culture would be much better than a larger metro made up of only cheap sprawl.

My ideal city is centered around a historic, yet vibrant, downtown that is built up densely with pleasing urban form. Row houses and mixed-use neighborhoods are the norm. There are no freeways slicing through neighborhoods and the automobile is not the dominant mode of transportation. The city provides the convenience of chain retailers and eateries, but is not oversaturated. Locally or regionally-owned, neighborhood businesses dominate, exceeding typical big box stores and drive-thrus.

Strong urban form is very important. I particularly enjoy Colonial era architecture and cities. It’d be wonderful to live in a historic row house in a dense, diverse neighborhood of a great old city. I definitely do not want to live in a modern suburban subdivision. Even older, detached homes in dense neighborhoods aren’t that attractive to me. I realize different people have different tastes, so a good city obviously needs a variety of housing types. However, I’d prefer a dominance of traditional neighborhoods of townhouses mixed with non-residential uses. Less dense housing further from the core should still be designed with urban form and public benefit in mind.

In my ideal city, people of different races, religions, and incomes would be able to live together in harmony. Low-income housing is intermixed with middle and upper class homes in the same neighborhoods. Citizens take pride in their neighborhoods and city. Diverse and mixed-use neighborhoods keep crime down, allowing for more “eyes on the street.” By celebrating its diversity, this city affords a multitude of cultural, educational, and entertainment opportunities.

Sustainability and efficiency is important for a good city. This means environmentally friendly buildings, compact urban design, and of course transportation. The ideal city has minimal sprawl and retains its historic urban form and density. Public transportation is an integral part of the city landscape, comprising of both rail and bus modes. The city also has an intensive bike and walking trail system, providing another legitimate mean of transportation, in addition to recreation.

The closest, real US city to my ideal is probably somewhere on the East Coast. I really like old Georgian architecture and dense urban neighborhoods that can only be found in the East Coast’s historic cities. I particularly enjoy the cities of Washington, DC, and Baltimore. Both cities are rich in historic buildings and urban neighborhoods. I love how in Washington, nearly every decision made about development has been well thought out and planned. Another strong point is its extensive Metro system, allowing residents and visitors, alike, to get just about anywhere without an automobile. Although much of Baltimore is blighted with poverty and crime, its miles and miles of row houses radiating from the Inner Harbor puts me to awe. Even the suburbs appear more attractive to me than those in other regions. Many of them are built up as small urban centers along Metro lines. Others have actually been around for over a hundred years, maintaining their own historic charm. There are obvious drawbacks to the region, particularly social issues. Baltimore is inundated with crime-ridden, dilapidated neighborhoods and Washington is gentrifying at an alarming rate.

All cities have good and bad elements. I look forward to exploring more in the future to refine my definition of what the ideal is. Based on my experiences so far, the ideal city I describe is urban, sustainable, and diverse.

            Not much hustles and bustles… A mixture of peaceful hushes of the wind, and the low lying murmur of modernization. I would want to reside in a city where I can still smell the scent of fresh air, yet my eyes can play with the fondness of civilization and modern infrastructures. Scattered smudges of greens from trees… Dramatic and lighted fountains, abstract statues, modern parks, libraries, educational and recreational institutions… My ideal city might sound complicated as modernity and being classic conflict each other. But this great mixture, for me, when put to reality, will make a real ideal city.

            The roads and bridges must portray security and aesthetic quality, through its manly, sturdy and sophisticated structure. People will find ease and eye-pleasure passing through these infrastructures like they just want to travel all their life. I would want to stroll along a street where houses speak of sophistication through huge glass doors and windows. White, blue, black and gray colours of formality are painted on the walls. These will exude a clean and contemporary elegance in the eyes of daily passers by. I would love to talk a stroll to marvellous parks by lake side or by the bay. I would still love to see the sun set at the horizon that sets the waters and the sky apart. I would love to breathe in a city where toxic industrial parks do not exist. Where parents never worry about the air and the water their children consume. I would like to drive along roads where traffic rules are golden. Where traffic lights work like strict law implementers of the state, and where drivers care enough about commuters to put every golden traffic rule in mind.

            I would like to be in a city where people do not prioritize being better above everybody else. I would like to socialize with groups of people who value camaraderie and hospitality. A city with these kinds of people would radiate a harmonious relationship between neighbours, and my ideal city would surely include that aspect on the list. The streets of the city will never give off the irritating and frightening sirens of police cars. I would want to settle in a city where crime rates are never worries of the people and city officials.

            Modernity really looks appealing. And yes, an ideal city may touches of it. But for me, a city made up of modernity entirely can be considered as a city without a heart. Pure modernity leaves no space for the natural things which actually gives colour, radiance and life to the modern walls of a city. And my idea of city is actually a mixture of modernization and naturality. I would like to reside in a place that is able to preserve the coolness of the breeze the trees bring, the pleasure of a boat ride on a lake and the clearness of an unpolluted blue sky. And also a place which is open to the new, the simple, the sophisticated taste of modernization.

Have you ever lived in, or visited, a town or city that felt just right to you? If so, what was it that appealed to you, and why?

Imagine your ideal town or city. What would it look like? What would housing, commerce, transportation and recreation be like? What amenities or special features would it include, and why?

In “ Tech Envisions the Ultimate Start-Up: An Entire City ,” Emily Badger writes:

SAN FRANCISCO — For all the optimism, innovation and wealth that are produced here, the Bay Area can also feel like a place that doesn’t work quite right. The cost of housing has priced out teachers and line cooks. Income inequality is among the widest in the nation. The homeless crisis never seems to ebb. Traffic is a mess. On bad days, transit is, too. And local governments are locked in conflict. Clearly, the region has not been optimized. “It could be so much better,” said Ben Huh, who moved to San Francisco in 2016 after running the Cheezburger blog empire in Seattle. “There’s so much wealth. There’s so much opportunity.” In the maddening gap between how this place functions and how inventors and engineers here think it should, many have become enamored with the same idea: What if the people who build circuits and social networks could build cities, too? Wholly new places, designed from scratch and freed from broken policies. Mr. Huh leads a project begun by the start-up accelerator Y Combinator to explore the creation of new cities. She will touch you in ways unknown to humankind and will give you the solace you have always craved. Kolkata is excellent as a city. You can never get tired of Kolkata. Living here is like pursuing a long lost dream of culture and inheritance. Kolkata shapes you in the classiest ways possible.

Heritage colleges like the Presidency University, Rajabazar Science College, Jadavpur University, etc. ensure that students get an excellent education. Kolkata has tremendous patriotic fervor, and it was where the first students’ movement began. The colleges teach moral values besides academic curriculums. Students know what god for their country is.

Kolkata was also the central hub of the Naxalite movement. The city shapes people in a way that they refuse to accept injustice. Kolkata has a strong political base, and the people here would do anything to stand up for what is right. Apart from the educational role, Kolkata also has advanced business centers. Every year, a business meeting is organized in Kolkata, and the economy is strengthened.

My city has countless spectacles. Sitting by the river Ganges on a chilly winter night, staring at the city lights on the other side as cars and buses rush past us is surreal. Be it the iconic Rabindra Setu or the Dakshineshwar Temple, Kolkata has many structures that have endured the ravages of time.

Coming to historical monuments, Kolkata is home to the famous Victoria Memorial, which is one of the most celebrated monuments of all time. The Indian Museum, located near Esplanade, is again a structure that has mesmerized tourists. The Indian Museum is an excellent source of research and has countless wonders.

My city has woven its members in a string of love and values. Kolkata accepts everyone. The ever welcoming Academy Gates has given place to all artists with out-stretched arms.
