How to Find Scholarships for Graduate School
Like for undergraduates, many scholarships and fellowships are available to students seeking a master's degree.

Scholarships are usually merit-based – such as for a certain GPA, athletic ability or hobby – or based on a student's specific area of study or identity.
Key Takeaways:
- Grants and scholarships are forms of financial aid that don't need to be paid back.
- Don't overlook applying to local scholarships.
- Have someone take a second look before submitting a scholarship application.
While it's well known that financial aid exists for undergraduates, many students are unaware that scholarships also are available for those seeking a graduate degree .
Funding amounts and availability of scholarships for graduate students vary by program, but every dollar counts, experts say.
The application process differs depending on the graduate scholarship, but may require filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA , writing an essay and submitting a letter of recommendation .
For prospective professional and graduate students, here are some points to consider when tracking down scholarships to pay for an advanced degree .
The Difference Between Grants and Scholarships
Grants and scholarships are forms of financial aid that don't need to be paid back, also known as "gift aid."
They "can come in all kinds of amounts and students can apply for several at a time to help cover the cost of tuition," Suzanne T. Ortega, president of the Council of Graduate Schools, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit organization dedicated to improving and advancing graduate education, wrote in an email.
Grants, however, are typically awarded at the college , state or federal level based on financial need, like the federal Pell Grant for low-income students. Pell Grants are generally for undergraduate students, but graduate students may be eligible for other federal grants.
"There are different resources for graduate students that aren't available to undergraduate students," says Deanne Rivera, graduate student funding specialist at the University of California, Berkeley Graduate Division . "For example, if a graduate student is teaching an undergraduate course, that's something that they receive a salary for and then also, in some cases, like a tuition waiver or tuition remission."
Where to Look for Graduate School Scholarships
Different types of national graduate school scholarships are listed on database search websites, like Fastweb , Appily and Unigo . GoGrad is another online resource that lists niche scholarships for prospective and current grad students.
"Often, what is called a scholarship in the undergraduate sphere is frequently called a fellowship in the graduate sphere," Ortega says. "So be sure to look for fellowships as well."
Students can reach out to the school's financial aid office or talk with a program department head or adviser to learn about degree- or research-specific scholarships.
Graduate students should also not look past applying to local scholarships , which are usually less competitive than national scholarships, experts say. A student's employer , parent's employer or even place of worship, like a church or synagogue, may offer scholarships.
Students shouldn't have to pay to apply to scholarships, says Shannon Vasconcelos, senior director of college finance at Bright Horizons College Coach, a college admissions consulting firm.
"There's scammy organizations out there that will charge you and guarantee they'll find lots of scholarship money for you," she says. "Anytime there's guarantees and you have to pay money, I would keep my antenna up for those kinds of things."
But applying to scholarships through professional associations is an exception, Vasconcelos adds.
"Sometimes you do have to pay a membership fee to be a member of this organization that awards the scholarships," she says. "I would just get look carefully at your chances of winning the scholarship compared to how much the membership fee is. And does a membership in this organization come with other benefits that would make that membership fee worthwhile?"
When to Apply for Scholarships for Grad School
Deadlines for scholarships vary, but Ortega advises students to start their search as soon as they're accepted into a graduate program – if not before.
"You can apply to scholarships year-round, so always be on the lookout for new ones that pop up," she says. "Even if you planned to take out a student loan, you can still apply for scholarships to help reduce the amount of loan you need."
What's the Best Strategy to Win a Scholarship?
For private, outside scholarships, it's important to read the requirements of the award and determine who's eligible, Vasconcelos says.
"You don't want to spend a ton of time applying for a scholarship only to find out it's not actually available to graduate students," she says. "I think grad students maybe just need to be a little more careful in reviewing requirements – though, of course, everybody has to do that."
Students should also understand the awarding organization's mission, Vasconcelos says.
"Make sure you let that organization know that you getting this scholarship will allow you to forward their mission in some way," she says. "I think that's easier to do at the graduate level when you have maybe more of an established work history, you have a more specific vision of what you want your future career to be, as opposed to an undergraduate student, who is just starting out, is less clear on a future vision."
Before submitting a scholarship application, have a peer or undergraduate adviser review the application for grammar mistakes and other errors, experts say.
"An advantage of applying for scholarships as a graduate student versus an undergraduate is that you have more life and educational experience to draw from when writing a scholarship essay ," Ortega says. "Since graduate school programs are more focused on a specific area, it’s easier to speak to why you are pursuing this degree or area of research, which may be a compelling story for the scholarship application."

PhD Student Funding Overview
At Yale, you can earn your doctorate at our expense.
Our funding packages for Yale PhD students are among the most generous in the world. Every PhD student receives a fellowship for the full cost of tuition, a stipend for living expenses, and paid health coverage, though the details of your funding package will differ depending on your academic program. On average, doctoral students receive more than $500,000 in tuition fellowships, stipends, and health premium benefits over the course of their enrollment. Full PhD funding normally extends for a minimum of five years, unless your doctoral program is of shorter duration, e.g., Investigative Medicine, Law, Nursing, and Public Health.
The main categories of funding available to PhD students are detailed below. Our Programs & Policies handbook contains additional information about funding and fellowship opportunities available at the Graduate School, along with applicable policies.
If you have questions about your funding, you can ask your program registrar or DGS, Graduate Financial Aid, or Associate Dean Robert Harper-Mangels.
Types of Funding for PhD Students
University Fellowships (UFs) are provided through the Graduate School and do not require teaching in Yale's Teaching Fellow Program. UFs are often used during the initial year(s) of your doctoral program to cover your stipend and tuition, when you are engaged in coursework and identifying an adviser.
For official policies governing University Fellowships, including information on deferring a UF, please see our Programs & Policies Bulletin .
In subsequent years and in most programs, your stipend will be funded by a teaching fellowship or a research assistantship.
Teaching Fellowships (TFs) are contingent on teaching Yale's Teaching Fellow Program (TFP). While you are on a TF, a portion of your stipend is compensation for teaching. The rest of your stipend will come from other sources, depending on your department or program. See the Teaching Fellow Funding page for more information.
The teaching portion of your stipend is subject to federal tax withholding, so you will notice a difference in your paycheck in teaching versus non-teaching semesters.
In lieu of teaching in the Teaching Fellow Program, PhD students in the humanities and social sciences may choose to undertake one of the available Professional Development Opportunities . These positions allow you to gain professional experience at a library, museum, or other office on campus relevant to your studies.
If you are in the natural sciences, your funding will likely come from training grants and faculty research grants at some point during your enrollment. In most programs, you may only join a research group that has active grant funding. Please consult with your DGS, if you have questions about this aspect of your funding package.
We strongly encourage you to compete for external fellowships. Winning an external award in a national competition, whether sponsored by a public or private agency, is a significant honor. External fellowships may be subject to our Combined Award policy. Please be sure to review our External Fellowships & Awards page to understand how external awards interact with university funding.
An external fellowship may also offer you added flexibility in your program.
- If you are a student in the natural sciences, an external fellowship may allow you to pursue a project or idea that is otherwise not eligible for financial support through your adviser’s research funding.
- If you are a student in the humanities or social sciences, an external fellowship might allow you to defer a University Fellowship (UF) to a subsequent term or year.
You can search for external fellowships through the Yale Student Grants Database , other university search engines (e.g., UCLA ), and commercial sites .
You must notify the Graduate School of any external awards you receive.
- Send a copy of your award letter to the Financial Aid Office at [email protected] .
- If your award is subject to the Combined Award policy, then you will receive a combined award letter via email when your award has been processed, outlining your updated funding package.
For any questions and concerns regarding your combined award letter, please contact the Graduate School Financial Aid Office via email at [email protected]. Associate Dean Robert Harper-Mangels can also advise regarding our Combined Award policy.

DAAD Scholarships - An Overview
Would you like to study, carry out research or learn German in Germany and are you looking for funding? Every year, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) supports well over 100,000 German and international students and researchers around the globe – making it the world's largest funding organisation of its kind. Learn more about our scholarship options.
DAAD scholarships are aimed primarily at graduates, doctoral students and postdocs and are awarded for study and research visits to universities and non-university research institutions in Germany. In some programmes, internships are also funded.
DAAD awards research grants for PhD students from almost all countries of origin. A grant for a full Doctoral programme in Germany is offered primarily to applicants from developing and emerging countries.
Scholarships for a Master's degree in Germany are available, in particular, for persons from industrial countries. However, some study scholarship programs are aimed specifically at students from developing and emerging countries, such as the "Study scholarships for STEM disciplines“ and "Development-related Postgraduate Courses (EPOS)" programs.
Students and doctoral candidates who are at risk of being denied educational or other rights in their country of origin have the chance to get a scholarship from the "Hilde Domin Programme" . Potential candidates cannot themselves apply for participation in the scholarship programme but are nominated by an institution or organisation that is a legal entity domiciled in Germany. Thereafter, suitable candidates will be contacted by the DAAD and invited to apply via the DAAD application portal.
Also available are so-called " In-Country " or " In-Region " programmes in which students and young scientists and researchers are offered DAAD funding for a graduate programme, doctoral programme or postdoc period in their home country or region.
If you wish to apply for a DAAD scholarship, please read the call for applications for your chosen scholarship programme in the scholarship database , paying particular attention to application deadlines. The scholarship database will take you to the application portal. Scholarship applications are reviewed by independent and voluntary selection committees, which also decide on the allocation of scholarships. The committees not only assess the professional qualifications and the quality of the study or research project, but also the potential of the applicant. Special circumstances (e.g. disability) may be taken into account. The detailed selection criteria can be found in the Important Scholarship Information for Scholarship Applicants under point E.3 and in each call for applications under the "Selection" tab.
DAAD scholarships do not have to be paid back. They usually consist of a monthly scholarship payment (currently, for example, € 934 for students and € 1,300 for doctoral/PhD students) and a flat-rate travel allowance. In many cases, DAAD also provides you with health, accident and personal liability insurance . Depending on the scholarship programme, there are also additional benefits such as a one-off research allowance, family benefits or funds for language courses. The benefits offered by the respective scholarship programme are described in the call for applications in the scholarship database .

Applications are accepted all year round and there is flexibility on the start date with the largest intakes normally in October and April. Following completion of your minimum period of study, you’ll normally transfer to a thesis-awaited status (maximum 12 months). To successfully progress into each year you’ll need to pass an Annual Progress Review (APR).
You’ll be required to submit a progress review form plus a project report based on the first year of research. You’ll also be asked to review your Development Needs Analysis form. The APR meeting will take place with two academics, with one being an internal expert.
Course highlights
Work closely with your supervisory team who will help you clarify your project and support your development. Your thesis will represent an original contribution to knowledge and demonstrate independent judgement.
By studying this programme you’ll become part of the Graduate School within the College of Medicine and Health giving you access to:
- Supervision from leading academics to support you through your research programme including research techniques and training.
- Training and development courses to enable you to gain research and transferable training skills.
- Opportunities to attend and take part in Research Poster festivals and other postgraduate activities to boost your academic and networking skills.

You’ll become part of the wider University of Birmingham postgraduate research community located at Westmere House where you have access to training and skills development, careers and employability advice, wellbeing and counselling services as well as welcome activities and events.
Course delivery
As a postgraduate research student, we'll support your development in a variety of ways.
- Supervision – you’ll benefit from support and guidance from a supervisor related to your research area.
- Research support - access to dedicated write up rooms, libraries, and computer facilities.
- Publishing works – build your reputation and make your research public, by working with your supervisors to publish articles.
Research projects
At Birmingham, you can apply for an advertised PhD or propose your own research. An advertised PhD is typically part of an established research project and is usually funded by the University or another funding body.
If you want to pursue your own research project, you can apply to our research programmes to propose this. This is self-funded although scholarships are available.
Find a supervisor
If you’d rather propose your own research, the first step is to find your supervisor. We encourage you to browse the biographies of faculty members to familiarise yourself with the research going on in your preferred areas. Each of these contains detailed information on research interests, current projects and recent publications.
When you apply, you can suggest one or two potential supervisors, who you think might be a good fit for you. However, this is not essential. If you know what you want to work on, but are unsure on supervisors, you can indicate this in your application and the PhD programme co-directors will study your proposal in detail, and judge who is best suited to be your supervisory team.

If you are proposing your own research topic, you will need to submit a research proposal. It’s a key part of your application, so take your time. Your potential supervisors will use it to decide if your research is something they can support.
Your proposal should be a clear and concise summary of your research. It generally consists of an outline of your proposed research project, including your main research questions and the methods you intend to use.
You should also comment on the potential impact and importance of your intended research and on how your work would interact with current trends in your academic field. It should illustrate the relevance of your topic to the research interests and expertise of the staff within your chosen department.

These are most common in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Medicine) subjects, but they can sometimes be available for pre-defined research projects in the arts, humanities or social sciences. These may be advertised as fully funded (with fees and a stipend) or competition funded, meaning the projects compete against other projects at each institution.
Self-fund, or search for funding or a studentship once you have an offer
You devise your own PhD topic, find a supervisor, write a research proposal and apply to the relevant programme. If you’re offered a place at Birmingham, you can then apply for studentships or funding from various sources. Our Postgraduate Scholarships and Funding database lists all available funding.
A limited number of scholarships and studentships may be available to outstanding applicants. For further information, please explore our scholarships and funding database.
Application process
To apply for a postgraduate research programme, you will need to submit your application and supporting documents online.
If you are applying to an ‘advertised PhD’, please check the details of the specific research project for application deadlines.
If you are submitting your own research proposal, applications are accepted all year round. However, if you wish to start in September, we would encourage you to apply by 1 June. Whilst you are still welcome to apply after this date, it is important to allow time for us to review your application.
If you are seeking funding, please be aware that the majority of funding opportunities have deadlines in early spring so we would encourage you to apply as early as possible.
We have put together some helpful information on the research programme application process and supporting documents on our how to apply page. Please read this information carefully before completing your application.
